The Country Garden Doxies have moved to the West Coast! They have traded in their Mountain Views for Palm Tree Lined Skies! They've Brought the "Country" to the "Beach" - Back where it all started over 60 years ago!
Some of our dogs will be staying behind in Utah with Friends and Family, So there may still be an occasional Utah Litter Available. But the Rest of the Country Garden Doxies have left their Snow Shoes behind and are excited to try out their new Flip Flops!
So, be watching for our doxies playing in the Sun and the Surf on the West Coast Beaches! Where all the Top "Hot" Dogs go to Play!

What Color is Your Dachshund?

What Color is that Dachshund?

This page is to help in the definition of Dachshund Color.
(to be used as a guide....not a standard)

                 The RED Dachshund

May range from a deep red or mahogany with black highlights
(a black dorsal stripe and/or black hairs interspersed in the coat) to a clear light red.

Reds should have a black nose and black nails.
Reds could also have a liver nose and liver colored nails. (Similar color to the chocolate and tan)
A clear red has no dark hairs anywhere in the coat and its nose and nails would also be light.
All of these would still be registered as a Red.

Red is a Dominant Color

                  The BLACK/TAN Dachshund

A black and tan dachshunds coat will be black all over with tan points
(tan on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail).
Black and tans will have a black nose, and black nails.

Breeding too many black and tans will slowly reduce and/or eliminate the tan points (this is a fault - this is meant to be two-color)
Black and Tan is a Dominant Color to the Dilutes. (Blue, Isabella or Fawn)
Black and Tan is only recessive to Red

                  The BLACK Dachshund

A black dachshund will be black all over.
Black dachshunds will have NO tan points.
Blacks will have a black nose, and black nails.
This is not the result of continuous breeding of black/tan to black/tan.
True Blacks appear to breed dominant over the black and tan.

                  The BLACK/CREAM Dachshund

A black and cream dachshunds coat will be black all over with cream points in place of the tan points.
(Cream on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail).
Black and creams will have a black nose, and black nails.

                  The CREAM Dachshund

A cream dachshund will have a cream colored coat.
The cream color should cover the entire body.
The lighter the cream color the better!
Creams should have a black nose and black nails.
The cream color can range from a dingy looking white to a butter color.
Creams can have a darker overlay. This would be referred to as a “Shaded” Cream.
Cream dachshunds can only have smooth or long hair.
A “cream” colored wire hair dachshund would be referred to as a “Wheaten”

(True Imported English creams are only longhair, any smooth cream is not pure and may be the result of breeding clear light reds to eventually produce a "cream" or breeding the cream into the smooth lines)
Cream is a Recessive Color

                 The CHOCOLATE /CREAM Dachshund

A chocolate and cream dachshunds color can range from a light milk chocolate brown to a dark chocolate brown with cream points
(cream on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail).
The lighter the cream colored points, the better!
A chocolate and cream dachshund will have a brown to light brown nose and nails.
(A true chocolate/cream will NEVER have a black nose.)
They will have brown eyes and on occasion green to hazel eyes.

Both parents must be chocolate and cream or carry for chocolate and cream in order to produce chocolate and cream pups.
Chocolate and Cream is a Recessive Color

                 The CHOCOLATE /TAN Dachshund

A chocolate and tan dachshunds color can range from a light milk chocolate brown to a dark chocolate brown with tan points
(tan on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail).
A chocolate dachshund will have a brown to light brown nose and nails.
(A true chocolate/tan will NEVER have a black nose.)
They will have brown eyes and on occasion green to hazel eyes.

Both parents must be chocolate or carry for chocolate in order to produce chocolate pups.
This color should not be bred with red, as it will produce very poor colors.
~ Examples: Click Here ~
This is a two-color (must have tan points)

                 The CHOCOLATE Dachshund

A chocolate dachshund will be chocolate colored all over.
Solid chocolate dachshunds will have NO tan points.
The chocolate color can range from a light milk chocolate brown to a dark chocolate brown
A chocolate dachshund will have a brown to light brown nose and nails.
This is a recessive color it must be showing or carried in both parents to appear but breeds dominant to chocolate/tan.

                 The BLUE/TAN Dachshund

This is a dilute of the black and tan.
A BLUE AND TAN DACHSHUND CANNOT HAVE ANY BLACK ON ITS BODY ANYWHERE.
A blue and tan is close to gray in color.
Blue and Tans should have gray eyes, a gray nose, and gray nails.

Both parents must be blue or carry for blue in order to produce blue pups.

This color often experiences poor coat quality due to poor standards of breeding.
They have a tendency to have color mutant alopecia.
Blue and Tan is a Recessive Color

                 The ISABELLA/TAN Dachshund

This is a dilute of the chocolate and tan. (a mixture of blue/tan & chocolate/tan) Isabella and tans will appear to be a washed out chocolate and tan.
AN ISABELLA CANNOT HAVE ANY CHOCOLATE ON IT.

An Isabella and Tan will have gray eyes, gray nose, and gray nails.
This is a recessive color it must be showing or carried in both parents to appear.

Isabella may only be obtained when the lines of both parents contain both blue/tan and chocolate/tan
Breeding an isabella to a blue carrying chocolate should produce both isabella & blue.

Isabellas have a tendency to have color mutant alopecia.

Isabella is a Recessive Color

This section is to help in the definition of the Dachshund Pattern.
(to be used as a guide....not a standard)

                 The PIEBALD Dachshund

Areas of full color on a white background.
Usually big round spots on a white background. Similar to a pinto horse.
They may also have ticking (small spots of color in the white field. Like Freckles)
The ticking spots may only be just a few little spots on the toes and muzzle. Ticking spots can also be heavy, and cover most of the white background.
The piebald pattern can only occur when both parents are piebald or carry it.
You can have different patterns on a piebald in the spots.
(Like Dapples in the Piebald spots or Brindling Stripes in the Piebald spots)
AKC does not give an explanation of the piebald color in its standard;
But it is listed on the AKC registration papers.

                 The DAPPLE Dachshund

Lighter colored areas contrasting with darker areas of the same color.
Spots where some of the color is lighter.
The color is usually lighter than the base color.
Dappling may occur in the eyes, the eyes are blue or may have spots of blue in them.

All colors mentioned above may occur in a dapple pattern.
A small amount of white on the chest is also acceptable.
Breeding a dapple to a solid will produce both solids as well as dapples.
Breeding a dapple to another dapple will produce solids, dapples, and
Double dapples (HOWEVER, this should be done with caution and extensive knowledge as severe consequences may occur - see "double dapple" for further information)

To see Pictures of Dapple Dachshunds

                 The DOUBLE DAPPLE Dachshund

Varying amounts of white throughout the body in addition to the dapple pattern.
This pattern can only occur when both parents are dapples. This does not mean the entire litter is dapple or double dapple; there can be solid colors produced.
Must have areas of white on the body for it to be a double dapple.
Double Dapple Dachshunds should ONLY be bred to solids - this will produce solid and dappled puppies.
Double Dapples should NEVER be bred to another dapple or double dapple.
Double Dapples can have severe birth defects if breeding is done
haphazardly - blind, missing or malformed eyes, deaf or partial deafness - breeding for double dapples should only be done with excellent knowledge of the breed as well as the lines involved in the potential breeding.

                 The BRINDLE Dachshund

Tiger like stripes all over the body, commonly seen in the red colored dachshund.
Also very pretty in the Creams.

The striping can also be seen in tan points (or cream points) and on the legs of the two -colored dachshund.

To see Pictures of Brindle Dachshunds

                 The BRINDLED DAPPLE Dachshund

A Brindled Dapple Dachshund will show characteristics of both patterns.
Most commonly seen as
Tiger like stripes on 1/2 the dachshunds body,
and Dappling Spots on the other 1/2 of that same dachshunds body.
(see above for the description of dappleing)
This is most commonly seen in the red colored dachshund.
Also very pretty in the Creams.
Sometimes, in the red and cream coated dachshunds, the Dappling can fade and seem to disappear,
to the point where only the brindling is visible.
The Dog should Still be marked as a Dappled Brindle, even if the dappling has faded,
because the dog still has the ability to produce dapples, and if breed to another dapple, double dapples!
(see the information on "double dapples" above)

This pattern is also apparent where the striping can also be seen in tan points (or cream points)
and on the legs of the two -colored dachshund.
And in this case, the Dappling would be on the body, or main coat areas of the Dachshund.
This can occur in all the colors mentioned.
Breeding a brindled dapple to a solid will produce both solids as well as dapples and brindled dapples.
Breeding a brindled dapple to another dapple will produce solids, dapples, brindles, brindled dapples and
Double dapples (HOWEVER, this should be done with caution and extensive knowledge as severe consequences may occur - see "double dapple" for further information)

                 The SABLE/WILD BOAR Dachshund

The Sable pattern most commonly appears in the long coated dachshunds.
The Wile Boar pattern most commonly appears in the wire coated dachshunds.
A true sable/wild boar will appear to be black/tan from a distance.
This is because their hair is banded, red at the base, black at the tips.

The coat color of red (most common) is at the base of the hair fades into black tips.

The dachshunds undercoat will usually be red, with a very heavy layer of black over the base coat color.
(Sables are often mistakenly labeled when a dachshund has black hairs on back and neck over red color. Sable is an uncommon pattern. This is a pattern that can not be truly labeled until pup reaches 6 months of age. Many pups labeled sable/wild boar lose the black overlay and become simply red with no pattern.)

This pattern is most commonly seen in reds but may occur with other colors.

AKC will only recognize one color and one pattern per dog for registration.
When patterns are mixed, the pedigree will not necessarily reflect all patterns.
(Example – Dappled Piebalds – Dapple is a pattern and Piebald is a Pattern,
AKC will only let you register one pattern)
Because of this, sometimes patterns may arise in a litter without a "known" cause.
This is why it is important to research the pedigree thoroughly PRIOR to breeding.
It is necessary in order to better the breed, as opposed to just producing puppies.
