So you want to own a Dachshund?
|
Dachshunds require minimal
routine brushing to keep their coats healthy and in good condition.
The longhaired and wirehaired Dachshunds may require extra grooming or help
from a professional.
The Dachshund is naturally free from "doggy" odor.
The Dachshund makes a good companion whether you live in a small city
apartment or the country. Dachshunds are loyal.
Dachshunds are generally easy to train for the show ring, and many of them
really enjoy showing. |

Did you know?
|
|
· From 1930 to 1940, Dachshunds
advanced from 28th to 6th in rank among American registrations, and
maintained this average rank through World War II by constructive public
relations. ·
The Dachshund was developed in Germany more than 300 years ago to hunt
badgers.
|
 |
|
(This is a Badger) |
| |
· The Dachshund had a lively,
upbeat personality--spunky, curious and friendly. These traits remain from
the Dachshund's original job: "Dachshund" means "badger dog" in German.

Fun Doxie Facts
|
-
Queen Victoria’s Husband, the German Prince Albert, brought Dachshunds to
England in 1839, and presented one to his new wife, a dog that she named
Dach.
-
Gergweise, Germany, is known as the Dachshund capital of the world.
Tourists can rent Dachshunds by the hour for walks.
- The
Dachshund is the only AKC – recognized breed that can and does hunt above
and below ground.
-
Dachshunds are eligible to enter more AKC performance events than most any
other breed, including agility trials, earthdog tests, field trials,
obedience trials and tracking tests.
-
Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature. Standar Dachshunds
weigh 16 to 32 pounds; minis are 11 pounds or less. A Dachshund whose
weight falls between 11 and 16 pounds is affectionately known as a tweenie.
For each size, there are three coat varieties; smooth, longhair and
wirehair.
- A
number of well-known people have owned Dachshunds. They include artists
John Everett Millais, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol and David Hockney; Screen
stars Clark Gable, Christian Slater and John Wayne; and newspaper magnate
William Randolph Herst. At Hearst’s legendary home San Simeon, overlooking
the central California coast, a tiny ladder emerges from the swimming
pool, placed there in case Herst’s Dachshund, Helen, fell in and couldn’t
get out.
